Enterprise Charged an Extra Day After an After-Hours Return? Check These Times First
If Enterprise charged an extra rental day after you dropped off the car at a closed branch, compare your agreement, actual drop-off evidence and final receipt before requesting a billing review. Enterprise says after-hours returns are not checked in until the next business day, with customer responsibility continuing until satisfactory check-in.[1] A later check-in time alone does not settle whether your extra-day charge matches your agreement.
First, identify the charge you want reviewed
Start with the final rental receipt rather than treating a pending card amount as proof of an extra rental day. Look for the rental dates, duration, rate and additional time charged. If you cannot identify the line item, ask the branch for an itemized explanation before disputing a particular calculation.
- Extra rental time: compare the billed duration with the agreement and return arrangements.
- Only a pending card amount: request the finalized receipt before using this worksheet to assess rental-time billing.
- Fuel, tolls, damage or another fee: ask about that specific item; a timestamp comparison is not an explanation for every charge.
Use Enterprise’s official receipt page. It states that receipts for previous rentals made with an Enterprise Plus account are available online for 360 days beginning 48 hours after return.[4] If yours is unavailable, request a copy from the rental branch. Enter any required identification only on the official site, never in a public comment or a message to BigBears.
Check the after-hours arrangement, not just the grace period
Enterprise’s US daily-rental policy describes a generally applicable 29-minute grace period, then additional hourly charges, with location-specific hourly rates in the rental contract. It states that returning 2½ hours or more after the original rental time on a subsequent day incurs an additional rental day.[1] Do not use those thresholds as an automatic refund calculation for a closed-branch return.
The after-hours FAQ distinguishes airport and non-airport procedures. For non-airport branches, it says vehicles should be returned during normal business hours and customers wanting an after-hours return must check with the branch at pickup about drop-box availability.[2] For your review, retrieve the instructions you actually received rather than assuming a visible key box established the agreed procedure.
Copy this four-time comparison worksheet
Fill this out privately using dates, local times and the location’s time zone. Keep the invoice’s wording intact: if it says “return time,” do not relabel it as a verified staff check-in time. Ask the branch what that field represents.
- Pickup: date, time and time zone shown on the agreement: ______.
- Agreed return: due date and time, including any documented extension: ______.
- Actual drop-off: date, time, location and supporting evidence you already hold: ______.
- Recorded return/check-in: exact invoice field, date and time; staff check-in time if separately confirmed: ______.
Billing comparison: agreed rate ______; billed duration ______; disputed extra-time line and amount ______; approved after-hours procedure ______. Highlight the specific mismatch you want explained. If you returned later than agreed, include that fact rather than presenting the delay as staff processing.
Gather evidence, then send a focused request
- Rental agreement, any extension confirmation and final itemized receipt.
- Written branch instructions or notes of the return arrangement.
- Existing timestamped parking photos, key-handoff confirmation or return messages, if available.
- Previous support reference and a short chronological summary.
Do not assume a drop box records a timestamp or that photos establish a billing entitlement. Use evidence to ask a precise question. Redact unrelated personal details and send documents only through a verified company contact channel.
Copyable billing-review message:
Please review the additional rental-time charge on agreement [reference]. My agreed return was [date/time/time zone]. I returned the vehicle at [date/time] using [procedure and how it was arranged]. The invoice records [field/date/time] and charges [line item/amount]. Please explain which time and contract terms determined this charge, review the supporting evidence, and correct any billing error identified. Please provide a case reference and the outcome in writing.
If the first explanation does not resolve it
Contact the originating branch using your agreement details first. If the explanation remains unclear, use Enterprise’s official Customer Service route, which lists +1 855-266-9565. Its contact page lists chat Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM Central, closed weekends and holidays.[3]
Ask for the next review step and an expected response time; do not assume a fixed resolution deadline. Keep the case reference and avoid opening duplicate requests while a promised review is pending. If the charge matches the documented agreement, this worksheet is not a reason to promise reversal. This is a US rental-record review checklist, not a refund guarantee.
Your next step: Save a copy of the worksheet above, fill in your four times, and send the copyable message to Enterprise through the official contact channel. Keep the case reference number you receive and follow up only after the stated response window has passed.
