Rental Car Deposit Still Pending After Return? What to Do

Short answer: A rental-car deposit that still shows as pending is usually an authorization hold, not a second completed charge. First, check whether your rental has a final receipt. Then ask the rental location whether the agreement is closed and the hold was released. If the company confirms release but the hold remains, call the number on the back of your card and ask the issuer to trace the pending authorization.

Three checks before you call anyone

  1. Read the transaction label. Does your banking app say pending, posted, or refund/credit?
  2. Find the final rental receipt. Confirm the car was checked in and compare the final charge with the receipt.
  3. Note how you paid. A credit-card hold reduces available credit. A debit-card deposit can reduce cash available in your bank account and may return as a separate refund.

Pending hold, posted charge, or refund?

It says “pending”

This is usually an authorization hold. It can reduce your available credit or balance without being a completed charge. The amount may disappear, change, or be replaced by the final rental charge.

Call first: the rental location, if you do not have a final receipt or the rental still appears open. Otherwise, ask your card issuer what it can see on the authorization.

It says “posted”

This is a completed transaction. Compare it line by line with the final receipt for fuel, tolls, extra time, damage, cleaning, or other adjustments.

Call first: the rental company’s billing team or the branch shown on the agreement. Ask for an itemized explanation.

It says “refund” or “credit”

This is money moving back after a settled debit or card transaction. It is different from a pending hold simply dropping off.

Call first: the rental company if it has not confirmed the refund. Call your bank after the company confirms the refund date and amount.

Who should you call first?

  1. No final receipt, after-hours return, or rental still open: call the rental location first. The company may not have closed the agreement yet.
  2. Final receipt exists, but the amount is wrong or an extra charge posted: call the rental company first and request an itemized explanation.
  3. Rental company confirms the hold was released: call the card issuer. Give it the merchant name, amount, return date, last four digits of the card, and any release or reversal reference the rental company provides.
  4. You do not recognize the transaction at all: contact the card issuer promptly using the number on the back of your card. Do not rely on a phone number from a search result or unsolicited message.

Copyable call script

Ask the rental company these four questions

“Has my rental agreement been closed? What is the final settled amount? Was the authorization hold released or reversed? Can you email the final receipt and give me the release date or reference?”

Save the agent’s name, date, case number, and reply. Do not send a full card number, bank login, PIN, or security code by email or chat.

Company timelines are not all the same

Company What the company says When to follow up
Enterprise For a U.S. credit-card rental, Enterprise says it releases the authorization when the vehicle is returned and charges only the final rental amount. For debit cards, it says the deposit refund typically appears in about 5–10 business days, depending on the bank. For debit-card refunds, Enterprise tells customers to call the rental branch if the refund is not visible after 10 business days.
Hertz Hertz U.S. guidance on fees and payment methods was not accessible at verification time. Check the rental agreement or Hertz support for the current hold-release window for your location and card type. Ask Hertz whether the agreement is closed and the release was processed; then ask your issuer to trace it if it remains beyond the window they provide.
SIXT SIXT says for credit or major debit cards the hold is released by the card provider within up to 28 days; the bank may take additional days to clear it. For Maestro or V PAY debit cards, the amount is debited and refunded, usually within 10 business days. Check the final invoice first. Contact SIXT with your rental agreement number after checking with your bank if the hold remains.
Avis Avis says it releases the unused portion of the authorization hold after the vehicle is returned. Its U.S. guidance warns that the bank may take up to two weeks to make the funds available again. Confirm release with Avis, then contact the issuer if the hold remains beyond the guidance for your rental and card.

Important: These are company-published U.S. guidelines, not guarantees. Location, vehicle, payment method, after-hours processing, extra charges, weekends, holidays, and your financial institution can change the result.

Why an after-hours return can delay the clock

Dropping keys in a box does not always mean the rental agreement closed at that minute. Avis tells customers to arrange after-hours returns with the specific location and schedule in advance if offered. Hertz also tells customers to follow the location’s return procedure, and some closed locations continue charges until reopening. Enterprise’s U.S. after-hours policy page was not accessible at verification time.

If you returned after hours, look for a final receipt before counting the company’s release window. Save a time-stamped photo of the parked car, fuel level, mileage, key-drop area, and return signs.

Credit card versus debit card

Credit card Debit card
What you may see A pending authorization that reduces available credit A hold against available cash, or a settled debit followed by a refund
What clears it The merchant’s final charge and authorization release, followed by issuer processing The merchant’s release or refund, followed by bank processing
Best evidence Final receipt plus release/reversal confirmation Final receipt plus refund date, amount, and reference

A card issuer may describe the same event differently in its app. If the label is unclear, ask: “Is this an authorization, a settled purchase, or a refund?”

Before contacting support

Keep this evidence

  • Rental agreement and reservation number
  • Final itemized receipt, if issued
  • Return date, time, and exact location
  • Photos of mileage, fuel gauge, vehicle condition, and key drop
  • Screenshot showing whether the transaction is pending or posted
  • Merchant name and amount exactly as shown by the bank
  • Support case numbers and written release/refund confirmation

What not to do

  • Do not call a random “support” number from an ad or forum. Use the rental agreement, official app/site, or the number on the back of your card.
  • Do not treat every pending amount as a duplicate charge. Compare the status label and final receipt first.
  • Do not promise yourself an exact release day. The rental company and issuer handle different parts of the process.
  • Do not send sensitive payment details in screenshots. Redact the full card number, bank balance, address, and confirmation codes.

Quick answers

Why do I see both a pending amount and a final charge?

The pending line may be the original authorization while the posted line is the final rental charge. They can overlap temporarily. Ask your issuer whether the pending line is linked to the settled charge.

Can my bank remove the hold immediately?

Sometimes an issuer can explain or trace it, but the answer depends on the authorization status and the issuer’s rules. First obtain confirmation that the rental company closed the agreement and released or reversed the hold.

Does a weekend count as a business day?

Usually not. Company guidance expressed in business days normally excludes weekends and may exclude bank holidays. Ask the company and issuer how they count the window.

Should I dispute a pending rental-car deposit?

Do not assume a normal pending authorization is ready for a billing dispute. Card-issuer procedures differ, and some issuers require an authorized transaction to post before a standard dispute can begin. If the transaction was not authorized at all, contact the issuer promptly.

What if the refunded amount is smaller than expected?

Compare the final receipt for fuel, tolls, late return, damage, cleaning, or other charges. Ask the rental company for an itemized explanation before deciding the refund is missing.
